When Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon, his first words are known by everyone. Apparently, immediately afterwards, he added soto voce 'and this one's for you Mr Kowalski.'
When asked about this later he gently refused to elaborate - until recently. He explained at a dinner that it went back to his childhood when his family lived in a terrace of houses. Occasionally his football would be kicked over the fence into the garden of their Polish neighbours. One time, when retrieving the ball, he eavesdropped a row going on between them culminating with Mrs Kowalski's voice floating out over the garden.
"And I'll tell you something, Mr Kowalski, the next time I have sex with you is when a man sets foot on the moon."
