Children power

Nick Negreponte, the tech entrepreneur, recently undertook an experiment in Ethiopia. He took a sealed package of tablet computers  with solar chargers to two  remote villages both at over eleven thousand feet. The children there were all illiterate and had never seen printed words even on packaging. I have been to villages very near where this was and I can confirm that this is on the very outside of the envelope of where humans can make a living. Members of the organisation that Negreponte runs went back regularly to change the memory cards so they could see what had happened.

Within minutes one child had opened the box, found the on switch and was engaged. Within a couple of weeks they were into alpahabet games and able to spell some words. Within four months they had customised all the tablets and hacked Android.
