The ladder of life

When I was at university I had the good fortune to sit next to the then Duke of Norfolk at a dinner. He was a charming and approachable man – ‘call me Miles’ – and he gave me some advice that I have never forgotten. ‘As you climb the ladder of life,' he said, ' you may have to step on some faces: wear gym shoes.’
